New Richmond News: While most students spent their spring break having fun, Somerset Middle School sixth-graders Brooke Olson and Izzy Eskierka worked on a project they hope will brighten their classmates’ day.

“The girls wrote positive comments on numerous Post-it notes and placed them in two different locations at the middle school. Students often visit the boards looking/taking/giving what they need throughout the day,” said sixth grade teacher Dave Praschak. “For example, I took a note, ‘Make someone smile!’ Then, I replaced the note with, ‘I appreciate what you did for me today.’ We are very proud of the girls.”

According to Olson, she got the idea for the project from her mom, who had heard about another school doing something similar following the last school shooting. Olson took the idea to Eskierka and their teachers, Andre Johnson and Praschak. The pair then got approval to put the project into motion from middle school principal Sara Eichten.

“We started putting it together just before spring break. Then the Sunday before we came back to school from break, we put up the letters and the Post-it notes,” Eskierka said. “It took a long time to get it all put together and put up on the wall. We put together 200 Post-it notes to start with. We do upkeep on the board and the notes in the morning to make sure there are enough supplies.”
